Four experiments examine how lack of awareness of inequality affect behaviour towards the rich and poor. In Experiment 1, participants who became aware that wealthy individuals donated a smaller percentage of their income switched from rewarding the wealthy to rewarding the poor. In Experiments 2 and 3, participants who played a public goods game – and were assigned incomes reflective of the US income distribution either at random or on merit – punished the poor (for small absolute contributions) and rewarded the rich (for large absolute contributions) when incomes were unknown; when incomes were revealed, participants punished the rich (for their low percentage of income contributed) and rewarded the poor (for their high percentage of income contributed). In Experiment 4, participants provided with public education contributions for five New York school districts levied additional taxes on mostly poorer school districts when incomes were unknown, but targeted wealthier districts when incomes were revealed. These results shed light on how income transparency shapes preferences for equity and redistribution. We discuss implications for policy-makers.

Recent studies by a number of research groups have shown that the structure of epitaxial BiFeO3 (BFO) films changes drastically as a function of substrate-induced biaxial compression, with the crystal structure changing from one being nearly rhombohedral (R-like) to one being nearly tetragonal (T-like), where the “T-like” structure is characterized by a highly enhanced c/a ratio of out-of-plane c to in-plane a lattice parameters. In this work, we show that the critical compressive strain σc necessary to induce this transition can be reduced significantly by substituting 10% Ba for Bi [Bi0.9Ba0.1FeO3−δ (BBFO)] and that the “T-like” phase in both BBFO and BFO is stable up to the decomposition temperatures of the films in air. Furthermore, our results show that the BBFO solid solution shows clear ferromagnetic properties in contrast to its undoped BFO counterpart.

ZnO is a very promising material for spintronics applications, with many groups reporting room temperature ferromagnetism in films doped with transition metals during growth or by ion implantation. In films doped with Mn during PLD, we find an inverse correlation between magnetization and electron density as controlled by Sn doping. The saturation magnetization and coercivity of the implanted single-phase films were both strong functions of the initial anneal temperature, suggesting that carrier concentration alone cannot account for the magnetic properties of ZnO:Mn and factors such as crystalline quality and residual defects play a role. Plausible mechanisms for the ferromagnetism include the bound magnetic polaron model or exchange is mediated by carriers in a spin-split impurity band derived from extended donor orbitals. We will also review progress in ZnO nanowires. The large surface area of nanorods makes them attractive for gas and chemical sensing, and the ability to control their nucleation sites makes them candidates for micro-lasers or memory arrays. Single ZnO nanowire depletion-mode metal-oxide semiconductor field effect transistors exhibit good saturation behavior, threshold voltage of ∼-3V and a maximum transconductance of 0.3 mS/mm. Under UV illumination, the drain-source current increased by approximately a factor of 5 and the maximum transconductance was ∼ 5 mS/mm. The channel mobility is estimated to be ∼3 cm2 /V.s, comparable to that for thin film ZnO enhancement mode MOSFETs and the on/off ratio was ∼25 in the dark and ∼125 under UV illumination. Pt Schottky diodes exhibit excellent ideality factors of 1.1 at 25 °C, very low reverse currents and a strong photoresponse, with only a minor component with long decay times thought to originate from surface states. In the temperature range from 25–150 °C, the resistivity of nanorods treated in H2 at 400 °C prior to measurement showed an activation energy of 0.089 eV and was insensitive to the ambient used. By contrast, the conductivity of nanorods not treated in H2 was sensitive to trace concentrations of gases in the measurement ambient even at room temperature, demonstrating their potential as gas sensors. We have also made sensitive pH sensors using single ZnO nanowires.

Epitaxial ZnGa2O4 and Sr2CeO4 thin-film phosphors were successfully grown on (100) MgO, YSZ, and SrTiO3 single crystal substrates using pulsed laser ablation. Cathodoluminescence efficiency was remarkably enhanced by adding lithium in the ZnGa2O4 and ZnGa2O4:Mn for both blue and green light emitting thin-film phosphors. The highest efficiencies, in this experiment, were 0.35 and 0.29 lm/W at 1kV for as-deposited blue and green zinc gallate phosphor films, respectively. In case of Sr2CeO4 films, the highest luminescence was 0.14 lm/W at 1kV and 0.26 A/m2 for films annealed at 1000°C in air.

The growth and properties of undoped and Mn-doped ZnGa2O4 thin-film phosphors on (100) MgO and glass substrates using pulsed laser ablation were investigated. Blue-white and green emission were observed for as-deposited undoped and Mn-doped films, respectively. Luminescent properties as well as crystallinity were considerably affected by processing conditions and film stoichiometry. Films with enhanced luminescent characteristics were obtained on single crystal substrates without post-annealing.

Summary
Introduction
Conventionally dosed chemotherapy regimens are capable of obtaining high rates of response in a wide variety of malignancies. For example, the majority of patients with previously untreated metastatic breast cancer will experience significant tumor shrinkage. This is encouraging because tumor volume regression usually diminishes the symptoms of cancer: if this benefit is not counterbalanced by drug toxicity, the patient's quality of life improves (Coates, Gebski and Bishop, 1987). Nevertheless, complete responses in breast cancer and other diseases are less frequent, and the remissions, when achieved, are rarely durable. The cellular mechanisms by which tumors escape eradication by chemo-therapy are collectively termed drug resistance. Drug resistance is expressed in two forms: biochemical or absolute resistance, by which a cell cannot be killed with any dose level of drug; and relative resistance, by which the cell might require a higher level of drug to be killed. Absolute resistance cannot be overcome by any strategy that manipulates dose or schedule. Relative resistance, in distinction, is amenable to such manipulations, and is a topic of major practical importance in modern oncology. Manipulations of dose, and to some extent schedule, have long been demonstrated to be of value in the treatment of hematological malignancies. Lately, the value of induction and late intensification, a strategy hypothesized on theoretical grounds to be of potential value (Norton and Simon, 1977), has proven to be of benefit in the treatment of some forms of acute leukemia (Zittoun et al., 1995).

Polycrystalline CoSb3 films were grown on a variety of electrically insulating substrates by pulsed laser ablation from a stoichiometric hot-pressed target. These films are fully crystallized in the skutterudite structure, and the grains exhibit a strongly preferred alignment of the cubic [310]-axis perpendicular to the substrate surface. The film quality is studied for different single-crystal substrates and as a function of growth temperature and background gas.
Hall measurements show that the films are p-type semiconducting with a room-temperature carrier density of 3×1020 holes/cm3. The Hall mobility is found to be 50 to 60 cm2 /Vs, which is high for such a heavily-doped material. The Seebeck coefficient and the resistivity are measured as a function of temperature and are compared to bulk measurements.

Superlattice structures, consisting of SrCuO2, (Sr,Ca)CuO2, and BaCuO2 layers in the tetragonal, "infinite layer" crystal structure, have been grown by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD). Superlattice chemical modulation is observed for structures with component layers as thin as a single unit cell (~3.4 Å), indicating that unit-cell control of (Sr,Ca)CuO2 growth is possible using conventional pulsed-laser deposition over a wide oxygen pressure regime. X-ray diffraction intensity oscillations, due to the finite thickness of the film, indicate that these films are extremely flat with a thickness variation of only ~20 Å over a length scale of several thousand angstroms. Using the constraint of epitaxy to grow metastable cuprates in the infinite layer structure, novel high-temperature superconducting structural families have been formed. IN particular, epitaxially-stabilized SrCuO2/BaCuO2 superlattices, grown by sequentially depositing on lattice-matched (100) SrTiO3 from BaCuO2 and SrCuO2 ablation targets in a PLD system, show metallic conductivity and superconductivity at Tc(onset) ~70 K. these results show that pulsed-laser deposition and epitaxial stabilization have been used to effectively "engineer" artificially-layered thin-film materials.

The surface microstructure of epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7−x films grown by pulsed laser ablation on (001) MgO and SrTiO3 substrates has been studied at various growth stages, ranging in thickness from eight c-axis perpendicular unit cells to ∼220 nm. On MgO (lattice mismatch ∼9%) even the thinnest films grow unit cell-by-unit cell by an island growth mechanism. However, on SrTi03 (mismatch ∼1%), a transition from a layer-like growth mode to island growth is observed as the film thickness increases. Islands with clear spiral growth structures are observed in even the thinnest films on MgO, but for films grown on SrTiO3 the spiral growth features are found only for film thicknesses slightly greater than the critical thickness for the switch to an island growth mode. The islands consist of stacks of atomically flat terraces whose step heights are multiples of the c-axis lattice parameter. The island density decreases significantly with increasing film thickness, while their diameters range from 50–400 nm, increasing with growth temperature. The terraced island grain morphology causes a surface roughness of from 10 to 30 nm (depending on growth temperature) in films ∼200 nm thick.

Pulsed KrF (248 nm) excimer laser ablation has been used to grow nonsymmetric epitaxial YBCO/PrBCO superlattices containing 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-, and 8-unit-cell-thick YBCO layers, separated by N-cell-thick insulating PrBCO layers (N = 1–16). The 1×N and 2×N structures exhibit a rapid initial decrease of Tco with increasing PrBCO layer thickness, followed by saturation of Tco at a nonzero value, as the YBCO layers' separation is increased further. The limiting Tco values for 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-, and 8-cell-thick YBCO layers isolated in a PrBCO matrix are ∼19 K, ∼54 K, ∼71 K, ∼80 K, and ∼87 K, respectively. Single-cell-thick YBCO layers are found to be superconducting even when separated by ∼19 nm in a PrBCO matrix. These results are discussed in terms of possible Josephson and/or proximity effects coupling the YBCO layers, and the possibility that PrBCO modifies the electronic structure and depresses Tco in YBCO cells that are immediately adjacent to the PrBCO layers. Finally, high-temperature postannealing studies show that these superlattice structures are stable and that little diffusion occurs along the c-axis direction of compositional modulation.

K(Ta,Nb)O3 (KTN) is an interesting substrate for use in studies of epitaxial superconducting film‐substrate interactions because of a moderate lattice parameter mismatch with YBa2Cu3O7‐x and great versatility in electrical properties. KTN's properties are easily modified by doping to form an n‐type semiconductor and/or a ferroelectric with variable ferroelectric Tp. As an initial step in exploring such studies we have carried out what are believed to be the first epitaxial growth experiments of YBa2Cu3O7‐x films on insulating, semiconducting and ferroelectric KTN single crystals by pulsed laser ablation. We find that c‐axis‐normal epitaxial films can be consistently grown with TSc(R = 0) > 90K , △TSC ~1.5K, and Jc > IMA/cm2 on semiconducting and/or insulating KTaO3. However, growth on KNDO3 is problematic because of stresses generated by cooling the substrate through first order structural transitions, at even moderate cooling rates.

Pulsed KrF (248 nm) laser ablation has been used for in situ growth of smooth, high‐quality YBa2Cu3O7‐x epitaxial films of variable thickness on SrTiO3, KTaO3, LaGaO3, LaA1O3, cubic ZrO2, and MgO substrates, at temperatures of ∼60O‐730°C, without higher temperature post‐annealing. A rotating target pellet, fine focusing by a single cylindrical lens, laser‐beam scanning over the target, and laser energy densities ∼2.5‐3 J/cm2 can be combined to yield films of completely uniform composition and with ∼25% thickness variation over areas ∼8 cm2. The best films have Tc > 92 K and JC(H = 0, T = 77 K) > 2 MA/cm2. Film‐growth procedures are described, together with results of superconducting and normal‐state transport measurements.
